I am a member of the Hair & Makeup Artist Network (HMAN) because I have gotten all my TV and film work from other makeup artists and industry people who have recommended me for that job. I have never received a call back for a job from a resume sent off without a someone first recommending me.
I have spent hours doing online job searches for tv and film projects, but the way I was hired for those jobs always started with someone talking about me and my work to a director, producer or someone in the makeup dept. This is why I think every serious makeup artist needs to be a part of the Hair & Makeup Artist Network.
I joined after attending a free HMAN class on how to get work in TV & Film. The class was given by HMAN founder Michelle Lee and HMAN Advisory Board member Kim Greene. This was a great class and I networked with other hair and makeup professionals who also attended the class. I made some great contacts and life long friendships. This is the key to being successful. Networking and keeping friendships with people in your industry.
I have gotten many jobs where another makeup artists have been hired to work, but are already booked for that day and then call me up to see if I can take their place. I have also recommended fellow artists when I am not available. I found this to be an industry where its who you know and how well you take care of your fellow artists. If you know that much, you can do very well as a Makeup Artist.
ABOUT HMAN
The Hair & Makeup Artist Network is the first networking organization for Hair and Makeup Artists by Hair & Makeup Artists. Not an agency or a social networking site. HMAN understands that it’s not just about what you know, but who knows you. Their mission is to provide networking opportunities, business education, and business resources for self employed artists. Their unique concept provides artists “One Resource For All Your Freelance Business Needs.”
HMAN was born from experience celebrity Makeup Artist, Michelle Lee had upon starting her own Hollywood career in the mid-ninties. Now backed by a team with backgrounds in makeup, film, and event production, as well as industry vetrans and experts, Lee now helps her fellow artists become stronger minded business professionals while stressing the importance of networking. “It’s the only way to get work! We are just trying to make it easier.”
It’s true, networking is not a new concept, but neither are networking organizations. Just about every industry out there has their own networking organization, so why is the concept so foriegn to Hair & Makeup Artists??? Everyone know the best jobs out there are from either networking or job referrals from other artists. So why don’t we have a networking organization? Well now we do!
