I get a lot of questions from fellow colleagues and aspiring makeup artists so I thought I would start a FAQ blog to help my friends who have questions. Feel free to ask me questions so I can post more.

Q: Where did you learn to do all those cool makeup fx?

A: I always loved makeup and experimenting. I started playing with makeup in high school. I bought a lot of beauty makeup books and then fx makeup books. And tested out the various methods on friends and family.

I also went to makeup school. I took an 8 month master class at Joe Blasco ( in Orlando) and was taught by so many brilliant makeup artists who are very successful in the TV and film industry. I attended every class and lecture and even went to school early when there was a guest speaker. I made sure to stay in contact with my teachers.

Also, learning on the job is inevitable. Unless you are working on a low budget project and you are the only makeup artist, you will be working with the best Department Heads and Keys in the industry. They are usually more than willing to teach you their methods so that they can give you some responsibility on set.

Also, any makeup artist you work with will eventually “talk shop” and you will start swapping makeup secrets.

Q: I know you do a lot of special fx (especially cuts, bullet wounds, etc.) What resources out there have you found the best to stay on top of everything? I like to always keep my eyes and ears open and was interested in your thoughts.

A: I take a lot of classes and learn from everyone you meet. If anyone I admire/know has a class, I fly to LA or anywhere to find out their methods.

I buy lots of special fx books. The best one I recently bought is the monstrous makeup manual I got the cd version to keep it on my iPad and laptop (since its a pdf)

I always consult my mentors/friends when I need to do a new fx or want to know their method. My mentors have been in the business way longer than I have and they have so much valuable information on everything and anything so I always ask them first.

I made sure to keep contact info for all my teachers so I can ask them questions any time I don’t know how to do something.

Also I google a lot, I like to see whats out there to see how others do it. There are a lot of YouTube videos and forums where people post their methods. I like to copy and paste the best methods into a word or pdf file for future reference.

Also if I see something cool in a movie or TV show, I contact the dept head for that production and see if I can pick their brain and chat them up about the fx products used.

Another method I use is going to a makeup supply store and asking the people there how they would do a specific fx. Most fx makeup artists I have met are so supportive and are willing to share their methods. It’s not top secret to them and I love that they will give away their methods to the next generation. I have found that some of the same people have come to me to ask me how I do something, since it might be a different method than they learned. This is why I love the special makeup fx community.

It’s all basically trial and error and I use my friends and family to test out new methods all the time.

Q: How can I get myself out there ? like book more jobs I’ve been doing alot of testings to build my book..

A: First, I get myself out there as much as possible. Networking and meeting people is a must. I have a webpage (www.NancyMendoza.com), a blog ( this one), a twitter account (@NancyMendoza), Facebook Fan page ( https://www.facebook.com/NancyMendozaMakeup), I have a LinkedIn account and I also have a profile on any and every makeup artist networking site on the internet. ( google it and start creating your profiles ASAP)

Cruise the want ads on Craigslist, ebay ads, mandy.com, indeed, monster, etc. I’ve downloaded every single job search app on itunes. whenever I’m bored and waiting around somewhere I look through the want ads and see if anyone is looking for a makeup artist.

If you are interested in doing wedding makeup, go to wedding conventions, or talk to wedding planners. Forming a good partnership with them can be valuable.

If you want to get into fashion and editorial makeup. You will need to be in the scene more. attend fashion shows. Talk to any local designers or even Fashion design students and offer your services for their fashion show or photo shoots.

Getting into TV and Film is not as hard as you think. I started by contacting film school students and offering my services for their projects ( don’t charge them too much they don’t have a budget and are students!) This is a great place to start getting photos and film for your demo reel.

Word of mouth is very important in my field. The best jobs I’ve gotten were from a friend or colleague recommending me. Some of those jobs were passed on by friends who were already booked and needed someone they could trust to take their place.

More to come……

Check out the short film I did fx makeup for. so proud of these actors. They have all gone on to work on Charlie’s Angels making me a very proud mama bird. I <3 this cast and crew very dearly and hope to work on many more projects with you all in the future. Great job boys! XOXO Nancy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHNNY DEPP!

Today, June 9th is Johnny Depp’s Birthday. He has been my favorite actor since I was 7 years old. I remember sitting in the movie theatre watching Edward Scissorhands and feeling like my mind had been blown. The Makeup really fascinated me and from that day on I was set on figuring out how I could do something like that for the rest of my life.

When I found out that Ve Neill and Matthew Mungle were the makeup artists who brought Edward Scissorhands to life they became my heroes. Johnny Depp, Ve Neill and Matthew Mungle are names that are heard very often in my home. Even my 6 year old niece knows exactly who Ve Neill and Matthew Mungle are and is familiar with their work.

21 years ago Ve Neill and Matthew Mungle first sparked my special fx makeup obsession. I never thought I would ever come face to face with either of them or have a conversation with the 2 people in the makeup community I admired the most. I have to say that meeting them was probably one of the most exciting and fullfiling moments in my entire 27 years on earth. They offered encouragment and advice and I am forever greatful to them for the validation that I am on the correct path.

So, I want to thank Johnny Depp for continuing to bring these characters to life and most of all Thank you to Ve Neill and Matthew Mungle for inspiring makeup artists like me.

Without the amazing artistry that they have produced for tv and film I would probably be stuck in a 9 to 5 job pushing paper and hating my life. Instead, I wake up everyday looking forward to every project and challenge and I have never been happier. I love my life!

I am so proud to see my very good friend Kevianno accomplish so much in the makeup industry! This man taught me how to apply basic makeup on myself when I was 13 years old and that was over 14 years ago! My love for makeup began and blossomed because of Kevianno. I am so thankful to know such an amazing person with such a big heart. Kevianno Guerrero you are such a Rock Star!

I Landed in Los Angeles, California for the first time ever yesterday. It was cold and raining. It wasn’t the best welcome, but I was happy to be here. Got into my rental car and drove on the California highway for the first time. It was not as scary as I though it would be.
I guess my GPS took me the back way to my hotel in Studio City because I didn’t get to see the HOLLYWOOD sign ( I was super disappointed ). But I am determined to find it and take a picture of it before I fly back to Miami.
The weather was absolutely perfect today. Clear blue sky and about 60 degrees. I went to visit one of my former teachers from Joe Blasco, Michael McCracken and during that visit I finally got to meet one of my favorite sfx makeup artists Matthew Mungle! I Even got a tour of Matthew Mungles lab by Mr.Mungle himself. What an amazingly awesome man.
I hope I seemed calm and collected, because I was screaming and jumping up and down on the inside. His fx lab was AMAZING… So many famous face casts hang on the wall, Angelina Jolie, Leonardo Di Caprio, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, and like hundreds more that I was too overwhelmed and starstruck to remember. But not anymore starstruck than being on a tour given by Matthew Mungle himself.
For those of you that are not in the makeup world and may not be familiar with the name Matthew Mungle, I know you have seen his work but you may not have even known it. Do you remember watching Edward scissor hands? He did that makeup. How about all the different faces that Robin Williams wore in Mrs. Doubtfire? Yup Matthew Mungle did that too. If you watch NCIS or CSI then you have seen the silicone bodies made at Matthew Mungles’ lab. He just worked on the movies Inception on Vampires Suck. Cool right?!
Here’s the link to his website to see his work and the millions of movies and TV shows he has worked on. http://www.matthewwmungle.com

I started working at CHANEL last week. So in order to become familiar with their products, I have been testing everything on myself. So far I am completely in love with this lipgloss! I didn’t have to constantly re-apply the gloss during my shift, and at the end of the night when I removed all my makeup, I noticed that my lips were super smooth and hydrated! My lips have never looked so healthy.
I am constantly ripping the skin off my lip because I have such dry lips with my other glosses. This lipgloss has left my lips so healthy that I’m going to buy one with my first paycheck. The color I have been wearing is called insolence #57. (I find the name funny because it translates into disrespectful: showing an aggressive lack of respect in speech or behavior)
Here is how CHANEL.com describes it’s newest lipgloss.:“CHANEL reveals the next generation of lipgloss – with colour so rich and shine so intense, it could only be inspired by the iconic lipstick, ROUGE ALLURE. Bold colour combines with the smoothest, silkiest gel texture for luxurious wear and deeply dramatic effect. Lips feel comfortable – never sticky or tacky – and look luminous, full and sensuous for hours. The double-sided, flocked applicator is beveled to deliver ultra-precise definition.”

Favorite Things Friday: Z Palette
Ever since I discovered the Z Palette, my life has been much more organized. I am super OCD when it comes to my makeup, since I am a makeup artist. I strive to keep my kit clean and organized.
The Z Palette is amazing! I was able to fit 27 MAC eye shadows in one Z Palette! Taking the eye shadows out of the pots have saved me so much space! The eye shadows I had were not the pro store ones that have a magnet and go in a palette, these are the regular ones you buy at any MAC store. They come in a bulky pot and they take up a lot of space in your makeup case. I even bought a Z Palette for my personal everyday makeup. No more looking through a bag of eye shadows to find the right one.
Taking the eye shadows out of the pots is not as difficult as you may think. Just don’t do what I’ve done in the past and try to rip them out without melting the glue first. If you do this, I will show you how to fix a broken eye shadow and properly de-pot it.
Items you will need:
1. Flat Iron (one that is not super expensive and you don’t mind getting melted plastic on.)2. Tweezers or forceps 3.Ttiny screwdriver or something else you can pry the eye shadow with4. Hand towel ( so you don’t burn your hands)5. Somewhere to place the de-potted eye shadows on while they cool
Step 1Place eye shadow on the bottom plate of your Flat Iron. Leave there for about a minute (until the glue holding the shadow down had melted a bit)Step 2Remove Eye shadow from Flat Iron with Forceps or tweezers ( can get a bit hot)
Step 3Lift the eye shadow up and away from the pot with your tiny screwdriver or tweezers.

Step 4Let cool on a safe surface
Step 5Clean off any remaining glue from the back with Acetone or Alcohol
Step 6Apply Magnet ( you can buy them on Z Palette website) to back of eye shadow
Step 7Place in Z Palette and VOILA!

O-GLOSS INTUITIVE LIP GLOSS
I commented on a friends amazing lip color the other night, and I needed to know what she was wearing. Turns out it’s a new lipgloss from Smashbox! It’s called O-GLOSS. It’s an intuitive lip gloss that goes on clear and turns into your very own shade of pink. I had a few friends put it on and everyone’s lips turned out a different shade of pink.
O-GLOSS has Goji Berry-C Complex™ and ginkgo biloba, pomegranate seed antioxidants, revitalizing marine botanicals and moisturizing avocado oil that give you shiny kissable lips. And it’s not sticky at all like some lip glosses.
O-GLOSS is the Winner of Allure Magazine Reader’s Choice Award for Most Innovative Product, and two-time Best of Sephora Award Nominee for Best Lip Gloss and Best Beauty Innovation.
Also try O-GLOW it’s a creme blush that turns your cheeks the shade you blush naturally!

Meeting Valli O’Reilly was amazing! She has such a calm spirit and great aura. I felt a whole lot less nervous speaking to her than I thought I would. Then again, I have met tons of famous people since I was little, so I usually act pretty normal. This was way less nerve racking than meeting Gavin Rossdale when I was 13.
Valli O’Reilly showed us how she did the Red Queen’s heart shaped lips for the new Alice in Wonderland movie. She showed us the actual stencil she used on Helena Bonham Carter. It was unreal.
I would love to work with her in the future. I just need to rack up some film time so that I can join the Union ASAP! So if you need a makeup artist for your next film ( a non union film) call me! I am willing to travel!
